RS232 input to Keystroke emulation Multiple RS232 input to data file If you need to get RS232 data into an application program that does not support serial communications, easy com2key is the answer. Provided the data rate is not too high, easy com2key will receive data from a serial port of your choice and put the data in the pc keyboard buffer. It will appear in the active window, and therefore in your application, as if the data was keyed in.
f you need to store data being received by up to four com ports, easy com2key is the answer. You can capture data from upto four external RS232 devices each connecting to a separate com port, storing data to a communal file or individual files. You can add the date and time to each record if required. Ideal for WIP monitoring in manufacturing, piece work performance monitoring and despatch recording. How to set up com2key First, connect the RS232 device to a spare serial port on your PC: ![]() The input device (1) must have an RS232 interface, capable of transmitting without software or hardware handshaking. The device itself or its interconnecting cable (2) must be capable of being powered by an external source (3). The RS232 port itself will not provide power. Next, using Windows Explorer or similar, create a new directory in a suitable location on your PC, eg c:/program files/com2key. Copy the application program eCom2Key.exe to the new directory. Execute the program by double clicking it: ![]() Next, click the settings button to tell the program which communications port or ports you have external devices connected to. Separate communications parameters can be used for each port, or you can select general settings for as many ports as you wish. ![]() Start up actions - these options enable you to set up the program to automatically run after a PC is switched on, even if the PC does not have a keyboard or mouse. If you check the Start scanning box, the program will open the com port(s) straight away and start full operation. To change the set up parameters, you would then need to press the Stop button first. If you check the Hide window box, the application will run minimised as soon as it is run. To set up your PC to automatically run the application every time your computer starts up, click here. Show scan details - show all incoming RS232 information on in the easy Com2Key window. Prevent double scan - if the same data arrives within a pre-settable time then do not record the second scan. This is useful with conveyor scanning systems where it is possible for the same bar code to be accidentally decoded twice. Log format - these parameters refer to captured data that you want to save to a file. Here you can choose a suitable date and time format and a field separator for the data (which will be saved as separated variable length field records). For Ports settings details click here. Once your settings are correct, click OK to return to the main menu. The same settings will be recalled each time you re-load the software. That's all, the basic installation is complete! When you are ready to read in some data, click Start on the main menu. If you checked show scan details the incoming data will appear in the com2key window. Click Hide to minimise the software to the taskbar. If you are saving data to a file you can access the data by another program at any time even if easy com2key is still running. If you selected keyboard input, load your application into the active window and start reading data. If you selected output to log file it doesn't matter what program is in the active window, incoming RS232 data will be stored to file for as long as com2key is active. Try before you buy You can download a demo version of easy com2key now and see for yourself how easy it is to use. The software will function fully, but some of the input data characters will be replaced. File size 28K approx.
